Have you ever gotten gift cards as gifts. They sound ok and actually more and more people are using and giving gift cards. The idea that you can give somebody a gift card takes the headache away from trying to find the right gift and tells you friends and family that you put at least some thought. I honestly do not see any upside to getting somebody a gift card. What it does is it restricts them to go to a specific place to spend the card. Also, if you want to get the full 50 dollars or the full 25 dollars on the card, you usually have to spend more than that. There is also an expiration in most gift cards too. The cards that do not restrict you such as the american express gift card or the ones that banks offer actually loses value if you do not spend it in a certain time period.

Why do companies love to sell gift cards? because of all that and more. 8 billion dollars in gift card money was left on the table last year. Thus you can see that companies love to sell these things. If you really want to give somebody the freedom to buy anything they want, write them a check or send them cash. A better thought, buy them a few shares of stock, its probably the only gift that keeps on giving.
