For some this may make more sense than spending 50 dollars a month on cable. When I was about to move for residency, I was thinking of spending money on getting sattelite. I was thinking that I was going to be saving money over regular cable because satellite is going to be a lot cheaper. But think about all the costs over the long haul. A cheap plan that will get you decent cable over sattelite will run you about 35 dollars x a 2 year commitment is almost 1000 dollars for just the service and you cannot quit anytime without a penalty. The other sucky thing is that if you live in an apartment complex like mine, then you have to be facing a certain direction to get a signal and you have to pay a deposit of a couple of hundred dollars to have a satellite installed. There is too much headache for people like you and me to deal with satellite even though they may be the cheapest option.

Then there is regular cable. Oh yeah, go with the triple choice plan and pay 100 dollars a month for cable, internet, and phone but honestly, how much of the phone do you use especially since everyone has a cell phone. This is one of those gimmicks that every company has to force people to buy a package that includes the phone that no one uses and make it look like its a great deal. The package also gives you a limited choice of channels as well.

If you are like me and can stay up and watch 6 straight hours of television then you know that there are many many repeats and shows that are not worth watching. Until you get the option of ordering channels a la carte, it makes sense to find more economical ways to use your time and money to watch your favorite shows.

1. Blockbuster total access. I recommend this more than netflix because you have the option of renting in the store on top of renting from the mail. You pick three and you return them at the store for 3 at the store and while you watch the stuff from the store, you get your next three. If you time this right, you will never be without a movie, even if you always watch something everyday. I have watched over 40 DVD’s in a month doing this. If you rented straight up it would cost over about 150 dollars to do this individually.

2. download from the internet. There are many channels that offer shows online. I love how ABC does this, I watch LOST on ABC with only 2- 30 second commercials. Most of your favorite shows are online, like Greys anatomy. CBS also offers shows online.

  1. ABC - you can watch their entire lineup online!
  2. NBC - not as extensive but a lot of great shows online
  3. CBS - they have this thing called innertube where you can watch full episodes
  4. TNT - a lot of shows on TNT on “dramavision”
  5. Cartoon network - they have a “toonami jetstream” so you can watch cartoon network online
  6. Comedy network - watch cobert, south park, daily news, etc free online
  7. History Network - you can’t get full shows but can get short clips on history
  8. sorry food network only has very short clips
  9. HGTV - home garden ideas online

3. News. Get your news online as well. MSNBC, CNN, NYTIMES, CNBC - there are a lot of great short clips and you can put your clips together to get your own 30 minute show on the things you want to watch.

4. Get Joost.

5. Use the bunny rabbits =

6. Get sattelite TV online for free! This is probably the better one!

The only issue is if you have a love for sports, I haven’t found a good place to get free sports outside of radio and clips on espn.  But with all these options available, I’m not sure if its necessarily worth your money to get cable. If anyone else has any good website for free television, please let me know.

To watch the online shows, you need an internet connection (unless you share with a neighbor) and there are only two choices for most people: cable and DSL. DSL requires a phone line, which you already mentioned nobody needs these days. Cable internet is often cheaper if you include the “limited basic cable” option, which gives you 20 channels. Comcast’s internet is $60, but only $52 with limited basic cable included.
