How I saved about 50% on my new set of golf clubs!

Golf is one of the more expensive sports to take up if you are interested in beginning a new hobby. Its also a killer on your back if you had any kind of back injury. Anyway, I ordered my first set of golf clubs last week because I wanted to learn how to play. I’ve actually taken a few lessons when I was in hawaii. After a few lessons, I couldn’t twist my back for 2 weeks because I was in so much pain a la back injury from auto accident in minneapolis.

I paid 82 dollars for my full set of Ram G-Force TS 14 piece golf club set from Dicks Sporting Goods online. That is considered pretty inexpensive and you probably think that the clubs really suck. I don’t know if they suck or not but they’ve gotten pretty good reviews online for beginners and honestly, you don’t need 1000 dollar clubs in the beginning. I was told by a few that its better to buy cheap clubs and use the rest of the money you saved on good golf lessons than buy expensive clubs and learn on your own. Anyway, the clubs arrived today by fed ex–> about 5 days after placing the order! Dicks stated that economy shipping is going to take almost 2 weeks so that was a pleasant surprise. Its a beautiful set with bag, 1-3 woods, iron set, putter, and even a 3 iron equivalent hybrid! The only thing missing was my pitching wedge so instead of the 14 piece set, I actually recieved only 13 pieces.

The lesson to learn from this is that if you call Dick’s they will either send you another set after your return your set that you have now or as the supervisor did, gave me 20% off my initial order so my set cost less than 100 dollars! I have a lot to learn about golf before I use my pitching wedge so it didn’t matter to me.

Here is how I went about shopping for a decent golf club set:
1. check out craigslist for used clubs…there was nothing there I wanted.
2. ask your friends about any good cheap sets that they might recommend.
3. sign up for fatwallet.com’s cash back coupons or ebates cash back coupons…you get money back if you go to shopping websites by linking from their websites anywhere from 1% back to almost 20% back on anything you order.
4. use your cash back credit card to make your order –> I used my discover cash back card which was offering a 5% cash back on items bought at Dick’s.
5. if there is anything wrong with your order…talk to the supervisor to get either your order corrected or get some extra discounts!

Here is how much money I saved on golf clubs:
* List price at Dicks’ = 139.99 + shipping 12.00 + tax = 10 dollars
* Dicks’ sale price = 129.99
* Special discount at 10% current dick’s promotion = 116.99
* fatwallet 5% discount for linking = 5.85 discount
* discover card 5% cash back for using card = 5.85
* 20% off by supervisor due to missing pitching wedge = 23.40
* special free shipping promotion
total price paid $81.90
total money saved = about 80 dollars!

The lesson here is that it is not about how much money you make, but how you save your money when you buy things that can help you live a financial secure future. I bought a relatively cheap golf set for about 82 dollars and when I get better at golf, I’ll slowly replace clubs a la cart with the clubs that I really want.
